McCain Able To Speak His Mind

"The president listened too much to the vice president... Of course, the president bears the ultimate responsibility, but he was very badly served by both the vice president and, most of all, the secretary of defense... Rumsfeld will go down in history, along with McNamara, as one of the worst secretaries of defense in history."
- Senator John McCain (R-AZ), quoted in The Politico, January 24, 2007

Manipulating Our Citizens Is Our Number One Job

At a meeting of the Republican Naitonal Committee on January 22, 2002, Karl Rowe explained the administration strategy for using Americans' fear of terrorism as a political tool by saying, "We can go to the country on this issue because they trust the Republican Party to do a better job of protecting and strengthening America's military might and thereby protecting America."

In early 2002 President Bush issued a secret executive order authorizing the National Security Agency to engage in electronic eavesdropping, without judicial warrant, on phone calls between Americans and foreign nationals.

The president's action was dubious legality: He had failed to abide by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978, which provides a court to oversee government domestic spying in the name of national security.

New Orleans Still Drowning In Federal Neglect

"The response to the drowning of New Orleans has been a failure on every level. President Bush's eloquent promise in Jackson Square to rebuild 'higher and better' soothed the nation. But since then there has been no concrete action plan for reconstruction -- only a patchwork of programs marked by dithering, bickering and bureaucratic finger-pointing throughout."

David got me this awesome page-a-day calendar that counts down the days of the Bush presidency. Every page is filled with something stupid (and therefore hilarious) that he's said/done/hinted at/etc. I thought, to keep this journal more active, I'd share the loverly quotes.

This one isn't today's but I thought it was funny.

Why Is This Man Talking (the calendar people made subjects for each quote)

"The truth of that matter is, if you listen carefully, Saddam would still be in power if he were the president of the United States, and the world wouuld be a lot better off."
- George W. Bush, second presidential debate, St. Louis, Missouri, October 8, 2004

I believe that was the one Ning was at.
