Oscar night!
Highlights:
- Ellen DeGeneres as host ('cause she's freakin' hilarious)
- celebrities willing to make fun of themselves (Robert Downey Jr., Al Gore, George Lucas, etc.)
- the sound effects choir
- the shadow people (I especially loved "Snakes on a Plane" and "Happy Feet")
- Ellen DeGeneres as host
- major upsets (Alan Arkin won Best Supporting Actor! Pan's Labyrinth didn't win Best Foreign Picture. Dream Girls didn't win Best Original Song, despite being nominated for 3 times in that category.)
- Pirates of the Caribbean finally won an Oscar for something (last time they were nominated in every category that ROTK was in so they didn't stand a chance)
- Ellen DeGeneres as host (I can't stress how funny she was during the show)

Other thoughts:
- poor Peter O'Toole: 8 nominations, 0 wins
- I wanted Cate Blanchett to win
- Meryl Streep winning would have been awesome
- Infernal Affairs is NOT a Japanese film!
- The Departed did not deserve Best Picture. At all.
- Penelope Cruz looked like she got swallowed by a peach-colored chicken
- I'm surprised Babel didn't win more awards

I'm really not sure why The Departed shouldn't have won Best Picture. Even if you prefer the original, the voters have to judge based on the virtues of the film up for the nomination-- and personally, not having seen Infernal Affairs, The Departed kept me on the edge of my mother-fuckin seat :P

I thought The Departed was mediocre at best, regardless of how good Infernal Affairs is. The characters were annoying, particularly Matt Damon's character, and they all seemed flat to me. One-dimensional, compared to what their characters could be. The overall story seemed flat, too, 'cause they could have done so much with the psychological and suspense part of the story, but they kinda skipped over that for the action and yelling.

And you really should watch the original.

Hmm. I'll have to see. I absolutely loved it the first time I watched it, and I'd been meaning to re-watch it. I don't know if I'll get to it tonight, but probably sometime this week.

Oh, and we totally have to all get together again sometime, with Apples to Apples and such. And with forewarning, I will have mixers and Midori :D

I might watch it again but I doubt I'll spend money on it.

Apple to Apples again is a must, but only if we have a big group. It's more fun that way. And yay for Midori!

well, if we plan it right, we should be able to get going with only three or four people-- I'm sure we could walk across to the middle school and overpower (or browbeat) at least a couple of the little people.

Also, we could watch The Departed at my place. I have it. :) And it would assure that you weren't disliking it for missing the "theatre experience" ;)

Which 3 or 4?

Oh, I watched The Departed in the theater so that's not why I didn't like it.
