Win!
You know that 9-hour exam I took about a month ago? I passed! *does happy dance* Yay, I don't have to quit med school. I didn't do as well as I would have liked but it wasn't horrible, either. So I'll just be happy and relieved for now and focus on the next exam.

Also got an interview offer for an Anesthesia residency yesterday. Double-yay!

I also finally got to see an open heart surgery today. It was surprisingly uneventful, which was good for both the patient, surgeons and anesthesiologists. And it turned out that even as a student on Anesthesia this month, I am not safe from pimping from attending surgeons. But I managed to answer all the questions correctly so I didn't look too stupid. W00t!

And one of my residents told me that my attending has been hearing really good things about me, and chances are, I will get a good letter of recommendation from this rotation. Also, got let out by 3:30 today, which was awesome!

So yeah, it's been a good week.

On the flip side, I've missed dinner for the past 3 days 'cause I've just been so exhausted by the time I get home that I just pass out at like 6 PM. And since I rarely eat breakfast because I'm always rushing to the hospital really early, there are times, like today, where I'm standing during a 6-hour surgery with no food in my system for over 24 hours. Not good for my health, I'm sure.

Thank you for your vote of confidence!

I'm going home for the weekend; there will be plenty of yummy mommy-made food waiting for me. ^_^

That's all very good news! Except for the unintentional fasting. That's less 'yay' and more 'please take care of yourself!'. But everything else is great. I'm especially glad to hear that you passed your exam an no longer have to come up with a back-up career plan.

It's a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. Now all I have to do is focus on one more exam and my interviews; 4th year will be pretty much a breeze after that.

congrats on everything!

and on the food front, are you a breakfast bar type of person? they might not be the healthiest option, but they're better than nothing for sneaking in a little food in between busy moments. the possibility of passing out during surgery can't be good! D:

Thank you!

I've realized that eating just a breakfast bar in the morning makes me get hungry faster. Like if I eat by 7:00, I'll be hungry again by 10:00. Also, I've bought them in the past but I always forget to grab one on the way out the door. I fail like that. XD But I've never passed out from weakness or dehydration; I've had a close call once when they heated up the OR and I felt like I was not getting enough fresh air through my surgical mask.

You passed! Awesome! :D

Oh gosh, please take care though... :/ Hopefully you can find something easy to eat so that you can at least have some food in your system!

Yay for passing! ^_^

I think I got lazy this week because I knew I'd be gone for about 3 months starting Oct. 1st, and I didn't want to accumulate food in my fridge. So I kinda just didn't cook anything.

Congrats!

I saw an open heart surgery too when I was a student. It was interesting, but uneventful. I was surprised by how relaxed the surgeons were though - throughout the surgery they were talking about the TV shows they watched the previous night.

Hope you get a chance to eat. I don't have meal breaks at work and eat whenever is not busy. I've gone an entire 8-hour shift without eating or going to the washroom, and it sucks.
[identity profile] anoudegozaruna.livejournal.com on September 30th, 2011 07:43 pm (UTC)
Thanks!

Yeah, once the heart went on bypass, everyone just kinda chilled. My surgeons were talking about AIs and the theory of technological singularity, how in the future, AIs overpopulate, take over the world and eventually swallow the galaxy. You can hear so many fascinating conversations in ORs.

One of the things about anesthesia is that you don't have designated break times between cases to go eat, drink or use the washroom. I'm gonna have to learn to adapt to that.

Yay, congrats on passing!

It goes without saying that you should eat for your own health, but I don't know how I would feel if I knew that the doctor performing my surgery was battling hunger on top of concentrating on the task at hand. So find some way to fit in a meal for your patients too.

Thank you!

You probably don't want to know how many surgeries are performed by underfed, sleep-deprived residents, then. But yeah, I think I'm only getting away with this 'cause I'm a med student now and the lives of the patients do not rest in my hands.
